How to choose a medical school

- Location
- Tuition costs, scholarships, and cost of living in the area
- Teaching style and organizational aspects
- Success metrics like match rates or board exam pass rates
- School culture and values
Make sure to prioritize your requirements: What is a must-have? What would be a nice addition? How competitive is your academic background?

FAQs
Where to study medicine?
Choosing your medical school will majorly impact your career goals and how you get there. Before you apply, assess your priorities and write them down: Do you want to study close to home, or in a specific location? What are your financial constraints? Do you have requirements regarding the teaching style or clinical opportunities?
What are the best medical schools?
The “best” medical school is one that fits your goals and where you’ll thrive. While rankings exist (Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Stanford), focus on factors like match rates, board pass rates, and program strengths in your areas of interest rather than just prestigious names.
How to make a medical school list?
- Set up a spreadsheet to compare your key criteria.
- Start researching and collecting schools that fit your requirements.
- Check the acceptance rates and review prerequisite requirements. Add this information to your sheet.
- Calculate costs of tuition and living expenses overall, and add that to the sheet as well.
- Categorize and prioritize the schools according to priority and chances (reach, target, and safety schools).
What medical schools should I apply for?
Your medical school list should, of course, include schools that match your goals and requirements. When you’re applying, you also have to consider your chances on top of your wishes: Apply to schools where your academic stats fall within their average acceptance ranges. It is best to include a mix of “reach schools” (slightly above your stats), “target schools” (matching your stats), and “safety schools” (below your stats).
How many medical schools should I apply for?
Most successful applicants apply to 15-25 schools to maximize chances of acceptance. The exact number depends on your competitiveness as an applicant. Also consider your budget for application fees.
Can my institution be listed?
Yes! Medical institutions can contact Lecturio’s team to discuss being listed on the platform here.
